Fee Schedules vs. Fee Schedule Plans

A fee schedule and a fee schedule plan are not the same things. If you want to use your dental plan as well as you can, you will need to know which is which.

Fee Schedules

A fee schedule is just a list of the charges for specific dental care services. Dentists and dental plan carriers set their fee schedule charges based on a concept known as UCR, which stands for “usual, customary and reasonable” fees. In essence, UCR is the average cost of a service among participating dentists. (Learn more about fee schedules.)

Fee Schedule Plans

A fee schedule plan is one type of dental insurance plan. This type of plan covers a certain part or dollar amount for each dental service or procedure. How much is covered is based on the plan carriers’ fee schedule.(Learn more about the types of dental insurance.)
