Nationwide by the numbers

While Nationwide’s beginnings were humble, a small mutual company providing auto insurance, the business has grown over the last century to become one of the world’s biggest insurance and financial services providers. $46.6 billion in sales were recorded for Nationwide in 2020 placing it among the elite Fortune 100 companies (an honor it’s had for many years). Its financial ratings range from a “A1” classification from Moody’s to “A+” from both AM Best and Standard and Poor’s. Compared among other insurers, Nationwide is ranked:

  • #1 among 457 retirement plans (according to Plan Sponsor)
  • #2 in corporate life insurance
  • #8 in auto insurance
  • #8 in life insurance
  • #8 in homeowner’s insurance
  • #9 in commercial insurance

Nationwide also has the distinction of being named to Fortune magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.”

Dental Plan Options

Nationwide has a broad portfolio of dental plan options ranging from "Classic" and "Classic Select" to the "Premier Select" and "PPO Advantage.” Plan choices can differ by region so every state may not have the same selection of Nationwide plans.

In the Classic plan options, 50 percent of in-network costs for the following major dental services are paid for by the plan after the plan member has been enrolled for 18 months:

  • Crown
  • Root canal
  • Dentures
  • Deep cleaning

In Nationwide’s Select plans, the coverage for the above services rises to 60 percent. Both Classic and Select plans have two options for the maximum covered services expense paid by the plan in a single benefit year: $1,500 or $2,000.

The PPO Advantage plan is marked different than both the Classic and Select plans. Its coverage is narrowly focused around preventive and diagnostic dental care. The Advantage Plus plan pays 100 percent of the cost of cleanings and oral exams, up to a maximum of $500 per year. There is no waiting period for preventive coverage. Other non-preventive dental services may have a discount applied to them if care is received in-network.

Much of Nationwide’s appeal to consumers is the range of options they provide. There is no “one size fits all” approach. Instead, Nationwide offers a range of dental benefits at different price points so consumers can evaluate which option is most closely matched to their oral health needs and budget limitations.

HMO Dental Insurance

Dental insurance plans use terms like HMO and PPO to indicate the kind of dentist network associated with the insurance coverage. HMO stands for "Health Maintenance Organization" and HMO dental insurance plans traditionally have several advantages including no annual limit on insurance company spending for your dental care. However, HMO dentist networks are very restrictive and often are small. To learn about the trade-offs between HMO dental insurance and PPO dental insurance, see Dental PPO Plans versus Dental HMO Plans.
