Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a dental condition occurring when plaque turns into a harder substance at the gum line. This substance is called either calculus or tartar. When tartar builds up in the crevice between tooth and gums, periodontitis can develop. Periodontitis, in turn, can damage a tooth's supporting tissues. If this happens, the tooth may eventually need to be extracted (i.e., removed).
