Group Dental Insurance
Group dental insurance refers to a dental insurance policy that covers multiple individuals who all work for the same organization (e.g., a business, a union, a nonprofit firm, etc.). Group dental insurance is offered to employees (and possibly their dependents subject to the organization’s rules). People who do not work for the organization (other than employee dependents) are not eligible for coverage under a group plan. This condition distinguishes group dental coverage from family dental coverage. In family dental coverage, multiple people who do not work for the same organization can still be covered under a single dental policy (but those people must be related to one another).
It is common for organizations with group dental insurance to schedule an open enrollment period in the late fall for employees to sign up for coverage beginning January 1st of the following year.
Group dental insurance is purchased by an organization while private dental insurance is purchased by a consumer covering him or herself (and possible family members as well).
