Inflation?
Consumers in 2026 are worried. Health insurance prices for Affordable Care Act coverage have skyrocketed 26 percent on average1 and there are fears of similar rate increases reaching the dental insurance market. Consumers are still reeling from the crushing inflation of recent years. As CNBC has noted,
Nearly half of Americans say their financial situation is worse than a year ago, a recent Credit Karma survey found. And consumer sentiment in December sank 29% from 2024 according to the University of Michigan’s monthly survey.
While annual inflation is down from the historic highs the U.S. saw in 2022, prices for everyday essentials remain elevated, and in some categories continue to rise. In November 2025, coffee prices were up nearly 19% from the previous year and the cost of beef was up around 15%, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.2
For dental insurance, cost increases are more than a matter of rising premiums. There are also out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles and copayments as well as the maximum annual benefit that determines the limit on how much an insurance company will pay for covered care during the plan year. Any dental expense above that amount is paid 100 percent by the consumer (and not the dental plan) until a new plan year begins.
Against this background, the next section provides some encouraging cost information about 2026 dental plans.
2026 Dental Plan Costs
The below table captures information from DentalInsurance.com’s own nationwide inventory of dental plans (PPOs, HMOs, discount dental programs, etc.; inventory varies by state). The data is based on those plans available for the largest metro region in each state for an individual 30 year-old applicant. The key costs documented in the table are premiums, deductibles, and maximum annual benefit. Other costs, such as specific out-of-pocket costs for a dental service, are not documented because of variations related to waiting periods and differences between copayments and coinsurance fees.
The data demonstrates that affordable cost points are available, but consumers should always be careful before enrolling. Since benefits are not standardized and key protections like maximum annual benefit vary from one plan to another, it is essential that consumers view dental plan costs in light of their features and cost-sharing for covered services.
