Tooth Pulp

The pulp refers to the soft tissue, blood vessels, and nerves inside the middle of a tooth below the enamel. The pulp of the tooth is important for multiple reasons. The pulp provides:

  • Pain sensitivity
  • Temperature sensitivity
  • Mediates the nutrients and oxygen needed to keep a tooth alive

A root canal removes the pulp from the tooth. A pulpotomy, in contrast, removes only the upper portion of the pulp from a tooth and leaves the pulp in the tooth roots.
