Out-of-Pocket

Out-of-pocket costs refer to the portion of a dentist bill that must be paid by the patient and not the insurance company. Common forms of out-of-pocket costs are deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance fees.

Balance billing can also result in additional out-of-pocket costs.

Out-of-pocket costs are a form of cost-sharing. Cost-sharing makes a portion of the dental care expense payable by the patient, so the dental plan does not pay 100 percent of covered dental service charges.
