Coinsurance

A coinsurance fee is a type of out-of-pocket cost where the patient pays a percentage of a covered dental procedure’s expense. For example, if an insurance company pays 80 percent of a dental procedure costing $100, then the remaining 20 percent (which, in this case, would be $20) would be paid by the patient.

A coinsurance fee is contrasted to a copayment, where a patient pays a fixed dollar amount (e.g. $45) toward the expense of a covered dental procedure. A dental plan will use either a coinsurance fee or a copayment, but not both for the same procedure.
