Balance Billing in Dental Insurance

Balance billing describes a medical bill where the charge for the dental procedure was in excess of a dental plan’s allowable charge and the dentist billed the unpaid portion to the patient. The limited payment by the insurer is called “balance billing” because it leaves a considerable balance to be paid by the patient. Because this practice can lead to unexpected expense for the patient, it is also called “surprise billing.”
