Appeal
Appeal refers to the formal process by which a dental plan enrollee disputes all (or part) of a dental bill. An appeal can also refer to the process by which a dental plan enrollee disputes a decision made by the dental plan regarding the coverage of a dental procedure.
Billing disputes can sometimes occur because of balance billing. Balance billing, also known as surprise billing, is a practice where a dentist accepts the reimbursement rate from the insurance company for a covered procedure but sends a separate bill to the patient for the difference between the insurance reimbursement and the dentist’s normal charge.
If a dental insurance appeal is unsuccessful, a dental plan enrollee can also contact the department of insurance in their state.
