Allowable Charge

An allowable charge is the maximum reimbursement amount that a dental insurance company will pay for a specific covered procedure. The insurance company codifies an allowable charge as part of their contract with an in-network dental care provider (such as dentist or oral surgeon). The collection of allowable charges for a dental plan’s covered services is known as a fee schedule.

An allowable charge is also known as the allowed amount or the negotiated rate between the insurance company and the dental care provider.
