Brushing your teeth is one of the basic tenets of personal hygiene, taught and reinforced before you're out of diapers. But tooth brushing is as much about the health of your gums as the aesthetics of your teeth. Gum disease has been linked to everything from heart disease to a lackluster social life, but one of your main defenses against it - the toothbrush - can pose a health risk all by itself. Yet few people give much thought to its care and cleaning. "I really believe we need to be better about taking care of our toothbrush," said Maria Perno Goldie, past president of the American Dental Hygienists' Association.
